Lungers harbor

Lungers harbor is located on a peninsula out in Hjälmaren in Arboga municipality. There are boat slips and a guest harbor that has been managed by Lungers harbor's boat club for the past 40 years. With its beautiful location, the harbor attracts visitors from both land and water, which was one of the reasons the boat club sought project support from Leader to renovate and expand the harbor.

About the project

Lungers harbor has long been a destination for both locals and visitors from further away. Motorhomes from both Sweden and Europe had started to arrive with increasing frequency in recent years. The demand for boat slips had increased due to returnees and newcomers to the area. The boat club had a long waiting list for the small boat harbor, with a waiting time of several years.

With its attractive location and well-established services in the surrounding area, Lungers harbor's boat club, together with several other associations and businesses in the local community, saw the opportunity for development. There was already engagement in the local community, which was evident in that often more people showed up than there were tasks for on the boat club's workdays.

The project's goal was to establish 40 new boat slips, a 100-meter-long quay for commercial traffic and visiting boats, a service building with shower and toilet as well as meeting room, 6 parking spaces for motorhomes, a ramp for launching boats, public barbecue areas, parking for boat trailers, and a more attractive swimming area. Once completed, it would increase tourism to the area, which in turn would benefit the local economy. The project also had more long-term goals for various activities for, for example, new Swedes, women, and youth. The project was well anchored in the local community and took place in broad collaboration with, among others, local associations and businesses, Arboga municipality, and the County Administrative Board of Västmanland.

After many volunteer hours from the boat club as well as the local community, the construction was completed in the summer of 2021. All the ”hard” goals were exceeded, with more small boat slips than anticipated. The ”soft” goals regarding various social activities were largely hindered by the Corona pandemic and the restrictions that followed, but despite this, a successful meeting for new Swedes was organized. In addition, an unexpected result from the project emerged, namely that a group of young, local entrepreneurs started a summer café. It was a successful concept that was appreciated by the harbor's guests.

Lungers harbor was a large and successful leader project that received support from several sources throughout the process. The work to develop the harbor continued even in 2022, after the project's end, and grew larger than planned. Västmanlands Television did a report on the project in the summer of 2022.
