for a better water environment in Mälaren

Tibble Sea Scout Corps in collaboration with Rotary Upplands-Bro wants to raise awareness and knowledge about the importance of keeping the water source Mälaren clean from litter and pollution. By organizing a lecture on the subject and carrying out practical activities such as picking up litter on land and in water to clean up our local environment, we can combine information with practical efforts.

Tibble Sea Scout Corps and Rotary see the importance of preserving the drinking water source Mälaren clean from litter. This ensures that in the long run we can secure a clean water environment and good access to drinking water for the Stockholm area.

Through these efforts, the organizations want to influence future generations so that it leads to less littering of the water source Mälaren, while also creating better conditions for a more sustainable future.

The project is divided into two parts. Part one is a lecture on the subject that will be open to the public. We plan to hold the lecture in our Cultural House in the municipality, which accommodates about 100-120 people. Regarding advertising, we see the opportunity to spread the message even to those who do not attend the lecture through the advertisement, perhaps even promote our practical activity to attract more participants. By purchasing an advertisement, it is almost certain that we will also get an article in the newspaper the following week, which gives us additional impact on the advertising. Therefore, we see it as important to be able to do this. We will have 2-3 speakers from, among others, the Mälaren Water Conservation Association who will conduct the lecture free of charge. Part two consists of practical activities in collaboration between several volunteer organizations, including Tibble Sea Scout Corps, Rotary Upplands-Bro, and nearby boat clubs. The practical activity means that we will travel around with a rubber boat with an electric motor and clean beaches, reeds, and other hard-to-reach places in our vicinity of litter, as well as walk along the beaches in our vicinity and clean up litter. In addition, we will work to remove three larger boats that are abandoned on an island nearby. If this is approved, we will dedicate about 40 volunteer hours from people over 18 years old to organize the lecture, in addition to which there will be an alternative two occasions to actively pick up litter. The goal is to hold one occasion after our lecture, that occasion will engage participants from the local boat club, the Scout Corps, Rotary, and the participants at the lecture/read the advertisement who want to attend. We hope to gather at least 30 participants under 18 and at least 30 participants over 18 on these occasions. Each occasion is estimated to last 4-5 hours. In addition, we will dedicate volunteer time during our scout meetings to continue keeping the local environment clean and nice.

Leader Mälardalen has participated in a day when residents and members of the organizations dedicate volunteer time to clean beaches of litter, as well as map larger items such as abandoned boats and more that need to be taken care of.
